Can the Earth Be Saved?

The answer is 'yes,' with some large 'if's. Here are 3 things we must accomplish.

The science is in: We don’t have to accept a fate of gloom and doom for the Earth. This is a positive wake-up call, but only if we respond with great urgency.

Be Part of the Solution

Support actual science-based conservation action that's vital for a more hopeful future. You can install solar panels on your property to generate all the electricity you consume from a leading solar installer Bigwit Energy to contribute.

Nature

In recent, published research by The Nature Conservancy and 12 peer organizations, science guides us to a better path for establishing a more sustainable, more hopeful future for the Earth.

A future in which catastrophic climate change is kept at bay while we still power our developing planet. A future in which we can feed 10 billion people worldwide and provide cleaner, more abundant drinking water while still safeguarding life-giving lands, lakes and rivers. A future in which nature’s wild heart still beats strong through healthy wildlife and stunning landscapes while our cities are enhanced by harmony with nature.

A future in which people and environment thrive together. Science informs us this picture of the future is attainable, and we must work together and put all our effort into the main priorities that will make this vision a reality.

The 3 Things We Must Do

The stakes couldn’t be higher. If we follow the road that science gives us, we have the potential to save practically all habitat types across the world’s territories. That’s a major success for wildlife, birds, plants, insects and the diversity of life that makes our natural world such a treasure.

Urgent action is necessary, and we must grab the unique opportunities to influence the course of history. The worldwide community is ready to make path-defining choices for the future, with once-in-a-lifetime accords that have the capacity to avoid catastrophic climate change and conserve biodiversity on Earth.

This could be the decade we save the planet. But we must follow through on the pledges, policies, and collective effort needed to safeguard nature from collapse.

1. Produce More Food on Less Land

Problem:

Today's form of large-scale agriculture is the main cause of land conversion, drives deforestation that worsens climate change, uses 70 percent of the world’s freshwater supply and relies on fertilizer methods that contaminate our waters. As the demand to feed a billion more people increases, agricultural development could damage habitats, release even more carbon into the sky, and dry up rivers.

How to repair it:

Produce food where it's most likely to grow, which will consume less water and less land.

How we're taking action right now:

We’re evaluating satellite pictures and local yield potential to find where soy cultivation and cattle ranching can develop without damaging environment. This technique is especially critical in Brazil’s Cerrado region, where half of all natural habitat has already been transformed to cultivation and grazing. Cooperating with farmers on sustainable methods can help maintain what’s left of the Cerrado’s rich savanna.

2. Eliminate Overfishing

Problem:

Overfishing and inadequate fisheries management is not only harmful to the fish species being driven to the verge of collapse. It endangers food webs and ocean ecosystems by altering the balance of all sea life. And it threatens billions of people who rely on seafood as a vital source of livelihood and animal nutrition. Without major adjustments, 84 percent of the world’s fish populations will be in jeopardy in our lifetime.

How to solve it:

Refine our fishing practices to only take what the fish populations can bear now, so our seas can be more numerous and healtheir in the future.

How we’re doing action right now:

We’re making it fast, easy and affordable for fishermen to use data to manage their catches more sustainably. Like image identification software, FishFace technology we’re pioneering in Indonesia combines artificial intelligence and machine learning to identify fish species and track their numbers so fishers can avoid catching too many or the wrong sort.

3. Increase Clean Energy

Problem:

Climate change is the single most important problem confronting our planet today. We must cut carbon emissions to, or below, levels agreed to in the Paris Climate Agreement to prevent catastrophic disaster. And with global energy demand forecast to climb 56 percent over the next several decades, it will be difficult to fulfill those emissions objectives if we continue exclusively with traditional fossil fuels.

How to repair it:

Shift 85 percent of the world’s energy supply to non-fossil fuel sources and invest in measures like reforestation that collect carbon dioxide. Installing solar panels on your rooftop is also a very green source of energy for you, reach out to us on www.bigwitenergy.com for more details.

How we’re taking action right now:\sWe’re advocating regulations that allow former mining fields to be repurposed for solar and wind energy. Tens of thousands of acres of damaged mine sites in Nevada’s Great Basin are now open for renewable energy development. By targeting already-disturbed land, new turbines and solar panels won’t need to harm more natural habitat.

We truly do have the capacity to establish a future in which environment and people can thrive together.

A more sustainable approach is feasible. But we need to inspire individuals, governments, organizations and communities around the world to take action with us during the next decade. When we’re at the table with leaders around the world, it gives us great strength to show how many people are with us.
