Airtel commissions 21-MW solar power unit in Maharashtra
Bharti Airtel announced on Tuesday that it has commissioned a new 21-megawatt solar power plant in Maharashtra's Buldhana district as part of its commitment to decrease its carbon footprint and contribute to global efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change. The solar-powered machine is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 25,517 tonnes per year, according to the business.
The captive power unit, which spans 80 acres, was established by Airtel in collaboration with Avaada to offer renewable energy to the company's Nxtra data centres and switching centres in Maharashtra, according to a statement.
"Nxtra by Airtel places a high value on sustainability. This is yet another step toward meeting our objective to source more than 50% of our data centre power consumption from renewable energy sources over the next 12 months, as well as contributing to Airtel's overall GHG emission reduction targets "According to Rajesh Tapadia, CEO of Nxtra by Airtel.
In Uttar Pradesh, Nxtra by Airtel has already commissioned two captive solar power units of 14 MW each.
The business claims to have the largest network of data centres in India, with 11 large and 120 edge data centres spread around the country, and plans to invest more than Rs 5,000 crore over the next four years to triple its capacity.
Airtel has committed to lowering absolute Scope 1 and 2 Green House Gas (GHG) emissions by 50.2 percent by the fiscal year 2031, using FY 2021 as the base year.
Airtel has also pledged to cut absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 42% over the same time period.
